Scholarships For African Americans

Significant contributions of African Americans, in the areas of literature, the arts, sports, etc., have received constant acknowledgment.
Sadly, African Americans' opportunities in education are still lacking, as they were in decades past. It is fortunate that state, federal, and private agencies provide educational grants for African Americans. The majority of African Americans struggling economically, currently have access to a greater number of college grants, than have ever been available before.

One of the widely known U.S. organizations that offers such grants, is the United Negro College Fund, also known as UNCF. Improving educational circumstances for African Americans, is the primary focus of this, first of it's kind, organization. In 1944, the UNCF began offering educational grants and scholarships directly to African American students, and the United Negro College Fund currently assists in making a degree in higher education an achievable goal for the majority of African American students, by lending support to many universities and colleges for black Americans. Prior to this, a two-year associate degree, or vocational degree, would have been what most black Americans had aspired to. Today, four year degree programs, as well as graduate degree programs are enjoying a boost in their black American enrollment.

Starting in the 1950s underprivileged and minority students in the U.S., were eligible for federal funds appropriated by the United States Department of Education. States interested in guaranteeing that a considerable number of their residents receive an upper education, offer state educational grants. The Federal Pell Grant is designed to assist undergraduate students whose parents' income is low.

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid(FAFSA), must be completed, by any student wishing to apply. Students are eligible to receive up to $4000 per year, through this grant. Students that have already received the Pell Grant, also have access to the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant. This grant can supply the student with additional funds amounting to between $200 and $4000. An instance of a state grant that awards considerable funds to underprivileged students, is the Georgia Tuition Equalization Grant.
